The publication paid $700 for the work, which was enough to send Burroughs the message that he could quite possibly make a living as a writer. Inside front cover has surface paper wear from erasure of owner's name w/another owner's name in green ink below this. Front cover has two small spots of what appears to be paint. Covers exhibit corner tip wear w/some scattered edge wear and some scuffing. Spine shows moderate wear w/horizontal splits at top/bottom and 5/8' split along middle front spine edge. This first state, first edition does not feature acorn symbol. Another difference between the first and second state is that there is an acorn symbol printed on the spine above McClurg's name on the second state. Chicago' is printed in Old English typeface on the copyright page, whereas the third state uses Gothic typeface. The first and second state books each weigh about 1.25 lbs. There are three states of the first edition, all three have the publisher's name printed on the spine and on the title page. This is first state of the first edition, 5x7.5' hardcover bound in original maroon publisher's cloth binding w/gilt titles. 1912, the first book edition was published in 1914.
